I am also of the camp that believes there is a strong correlation between eating grains and plants and insulinoma. Therefore, when looking at food and treats for our ferrets, we try to get the highest animal content and lowest plant content.
There are a number of relatively good ferret foods out there. Here is a link to a site that compares many of them and lists their ingredients in descending order:

Also, there's no need to shop for ferret food and treats at Walmart. You can probably get premium brands online for about the same price that you're paying for a lesser brand. We shop and compare prices at sites like
http://www.ferret.com/
and
http://www.ferretdepot.com/
We prefer mostly Totally Ferret products, including their treats, but as I said, there are a number of good ones out there. You can even make a mix of a few varieties.

So, what is a recommended diet for a Ferret? We buy Premium's Ferret Food from Wal-Mart. We also have been buying their Fruit and Vegie Treat product as well. Do we need to stop buying the Fruit and Vegie Treat food? Should we be purchasing an alternate main food? We have lost three Ferrets over the years. Two to Adrenal Disease and one to Lymphosarcoma within the past week. We, of course, want to do everything possible to allow our remaining Ferret to live as long a life is possible. Since the appropriate diet is the answer, please let us know what that diet should actually be. Thanks for your time!
Drew Lindhoff.
