Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Insulinoma claimed Fozzy
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

my girl was treated with pred and dietary changes.

i was already in the process of switching them to a no-grain kibble
and introducing soup/gravy when she was diagnosed.

she was switched off the kibble with grains immediately at
diagnosis - the others i continued with the gradual change over. i
also had to force the gravy on her because she didn't want it at
first. i make it with meat only - no kibble in it at all.

she did very well with this course for the two years. she was a good
healthy three and half pounds when her cagemate died. she developed
ulcers and stopped eating (combination of the ulcers and the grief
and she broke a canine and the gum was completely irritated, also).

my doctor did mention adding in the diazoxide - she really didn't
seem to need it though. once we got the ulcers situated, the pred
was still doing what it was supposed to so we never added it into
the mix.

we were waiting for her to regain weight lost so that tooth could be
removed - she went up a bit, then went into the last decline. she
just didn't want to be here without her buddy of more than 6 years,
so i had to let her go.

i'm hoping that the others from the petstore will do better and if
they do develop insulinoma it will be at a much later time than lil
bear. she was almost 5 when diagnosed. (had probably had it for
about a year beforehand - i adopted her and within 2 months it was
obvious she had it. the previous owner wasn't all that
knowledgeable).

i feed evo cat/kitten kibble and i also mix in some of the evo dog
red bites. they get my homemade soup/gravy also (usually a serving
daily). i make that with just meats - chicken, turkey, cornish game
hens, lamb. will do rabbit when i can find it in a store. might
also do a duck one. i usually do them as individual batches and
then mix/match the frozen cubes when defrosting/reheating to serve.
they also get freshly cooked meats and eggs and i've been slowly
introducing raw - it isn't going over too well, so it's been slow
going. the goal is to be mainly raw (whole meats as well as a raw
gravy) with kibble still available if they want it.

evo also offers canned food - both for cats and dogs - that is 95%
meat (they also have the regular type canned which has grains in it)
and i've given them that, as well.

the mdpaws chart is good for a basic guide of the different kibbles
that are available. it hasn't been updated in years though, so
that's just something to use as a basic. you still need to check
ingredient lists on the products when you're out in the stores -
many have changed their formulas since that chart was done. and
naturapet has split out their product lines...the innova and evo are
totally seperate lines now. they had innova and innova evo at the
time the chart was done up and the ingredients in the evo have
changed a little since then.
