i've always used plain old petroleum jelly (vasoline or store brand)
as a lax. for my cats and then, when i got them, the ferrets.

most of the ferrets will take it straight - for those that won't i
mix some ferretone in it.

usual dosage is 1/2 teaspoon daily during shedding and if you think
there's an issue, you can give that dosage up to three times a day.
i had to do that with my boo when he was a kit because he ate the
legs off his little stuffed frog. although it took a couple of
weeks, all the bits DID eventually work their way out of him, so we
never needed to do surgery.

more recently i learned about pumpkin (plain canned, not the pie-
filling stuff). 1 teaspoon mixed into their soup/gravy daily for a
few days, and boy! does that clean the system out!! again, i
avoided having surgery done when finola had a problem just a few
weeks ago (she doesn't shed slowly over the course of a week or two,
she drops it ALL within 48 hours).

i cleared using the pumpkin with my vet - even asked if i could use
it periodically (every week or so) as a preventative. he had no
problem with that.

the metamucil type product, i would think, is about the same as
giving pumpkin - both are fiber based.

i don't know why a vet would have a problem with using vaseline!
most laxative items that are sold are petroleum jelly based - they
just have flavorings and sugars added to make it more palatable.
why give sugar to ferrets when you don't have to?!
