Subject: [ferrethealth] Taurine Deficiency
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Jewel, who is about 4 years old is one of our 18 adopted ferrets. She
has survived two cancer surgeries and recently had 155cc of abdominal
fluid removed. She was referred to a highly respected veterinary
cardiologist who after a thorough work-up ; echo, ekg, and abdominal
ultrasound has findings "most consistent with moderate unclassified
cardiomyopathy with right sided congestive heart failure." The
cardiologist feels this could be congenital or due to a taurine
deficiency. We learned that a taurine deficiency can cause
cardiomyopathy. All of our ferrets are fed Wysong Vitality which
contains taurine however we will place Jewel on the taurine
supplementation recommended by the vet. Has anyone in this group had a
ferret with taurine deficiency and if so what has been your experience.
Additionally, you may want to check the ingredients of the ferret food
you are using to see if it contains taurine.

Thanks,
Stephen
