Subject: [ferrethealth] Lupron reaction
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi everyone,

I have whitnessed what I believe to be a reaction from Lupron with
one of my 7 1/2 year old ferrets, Callie.

Callie has been on Lupron for well over 3 years, probably closer to
4. I have noticed the last couple of times she has gotten her shot
(300mcg IM) that approximately 30 minutes later that she starts
panting as if she is having a little difficulty breathing. I have
also in the same time frame (past 2 months) increased her dosage
from 200 to 300mcgs. Her nose also turns bright pink along with the
pads of her feet. She also appears stressed. I've been through many
distemper reactions, I recognize a 'slight' reaction when I see one.
I was greatly disturbed when I went through this again this past
Tuesday with Callie, I no longer feel it's just a fluke.
When I got home I gave Callie .5 of a 1.0 cc of benadryl, an hour
later she was sleeping and was fine. When I did some research on
Lupron I did find that an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing;
closing of the throat;swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or
hives); can be a reaction in humans. My thoughts are that Callie is
having a reaction. I am seriously considering reducing her dosage
and also to pre-treat her 1 hour prior to her shot. If reactions
continue I will discontinue the use of Lupron on her.

I've been using Lupron on my ferrets since 1998 and this is the
first time I have seen this type of reaction. I get my Lupron
from, 'Professional Arts Pharmacy.' Has anyone else had this type of
experience with using Lupron on their ferrets?

Respectfully,
Patty
