Subject: [ferrethealth] Question on shingles virus
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My doctor just told me I have shingles on my arm/wrist. I thought it
was just sider bites, but he says no it's shingles. He put me on
Valtrex and will see me again next Tues. It is the same virus as
chicken pox, cold sores, and genital herpes. My question is, can I give
the virus to the ferrets? I've been playing with them everyday and I'm
always kissing on them. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't touch
them and cuddle them. I'm reading up on shingles, and it does say I can
pass the chicken pox virus on, even though that person might not get
chicken pox. If you've had chicken pox as a kid, you can carry the
dormant virus for years. Some people will get shingles from it and some
won't.
Anyone have any answers for me? Please tell me it's ok to be near the
ferrets.
