Subject: [ferrethealth] Need help with test results please!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I am hoping that a vet or other knowledgeable person here
will assist me by interpreting these outside
lab reports for my 27 month old sprite and giving an opinion. I am
very worried about this little girl! We live in a remote area and
our vet, though willing to learn, is admittedly lacking in the area
of ferret disease diagnostics. After receiving these lab results
however, she told me that she felt Bindi is not well enough for an
exploratory. We will be making the 3.5-4 hour trip to the valley for
an abdominal ultrasound on April 3rd.

History: Bindi had her last physical in January 2008. She received
a rabies shot at that time. All vital signs were normal. Spleen
slightly enlarged, vet did not feel this was out of the ordinary.
She weighed 899 grams and has maintained that weight since.

On 3-22-08/1900 hrs., I heard what sounded like one of my other
ferrets snoring (common occurrence). The sound got louder and I
realized it was coming from under the sofa where several of my
fuzzies hang out. Upon pulling the sofa out, I found Bindi
unconscious and lying in her own feces. A home BG test was done,
result 103 (my monitor has been compared to that of our vet's and
found to be 29mg/dL lower). It was 20 minutes before she became
responsive again. She was unable to stand without falling. I was
able to get her to eat soup apx one hour later. No emergency vet in
our area within a 3.5-4 hour drive. She was unable to stand at the
food and water dishes so I hand fed and syringe watered her
throughout the night. By morning I noticed there was diffuse
swelling of her neck, more pronounced on the right side, making her
look almost like her neck was broken!

3-23-08 She was still falling down while trying to walk. Continued
assisted feeding and watering throughout the day and night. Neck
still very swollen.

3-24-08 Bindi was seen by the vet early. Her in house BG was 150 one
hour after eating soup. Vet noted she was unable to palpate any
lymph nodes in the neck. Swelling diffuse around the neck. Temp
normal, heart rate and resp. normal. She was kept at the clinic for
the afternoon. Vet attempted to aspirate the swollen neck without
success. Xrays of the neck were unremarkable, no sign of blockage,
trachea appeared normal. Blood was drawn from the jugular while
under isofluorane for outside testing. Bindi was given a shot of
dexamethasone and put on amoxicillin, 0.2cc 2x daily (15mL/kg) and
sent home. Bladder and bowel function normal.

3-25-08 The neck swelling had gone down substantially, but still some
swelling and mostly right side. Her balance is improving and she was
removed from segregation because she appeared to be depressed. Her
mood improved later that day after being returned to her business.
The following test results were received that evening:

I hope this is enough information for someone to form an opinion of
what might be ailing my sweet girl, or at least point me and my vet
in the right direction to help her.

As always, thank you for the assistance.

Bonnie and the Chaos Crew.
