Subject: [ferrethealth] bulgy eye and sinus problems
To: fhl <ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com>

I don't know if Yahoogroups has burped on something sent earlier or
if some photos were recently added but the accompanying post was
either not sent, lost in the ether, or sent to the wrong address
(since a number of people recently seem to be confusing the FHL with
the FML, or trying to use the address of our last location:
Smartgroups which was dismantled after Orange bought it from Wanadoo)
if this is not a Yahoogroups burp.

Anyway, there are several photos showing as being new additions but no
post to go with them so I found the relevant old posts in the FHL
Archives.

Here are those posts:

I had posted regarding my ferret Warwick's bulgy eye. My vet
recommended I go to the Univ. vet school in my state, so I took
Warwick today...and my credit card. I had to leave Warwick because of
all the testing. I thought you guys may want to know what the Dr. says
so far. AND I posted some pics of him under "Warwick's Eye". The pics
are blurry because he won't hold still, but I think you guys can make
out what the situation is.

So far this is what the Dr. said when she called me this afternoon:

Dr. says, his bloodwork shows infection. His x-rays show nasal
abnormality and a "lysis" which is, what the dr. says, a boney
destruction in the bones of the skull around the nasal cavity. This
could be infection or tumor, more likely to be a tumor. They took a
few tissue samples from up his nose, but not knowing exactly where
they were going, the samples could be benign. Results from that could
be back Friday or Monday. Ophthalmologist didn't see anything
different from what dr. and x-ray people saw except Warwick may need
eye drops to keep his protruding eye moist.

Warwick is on clavamox, an anti-inflammatory and pain meds.

They did cut open the top of his head and drained out all the puss,
which leads me to ask the question, why didn't my first vet tell me
that was puss??

I can pick him up tomorrow around 3 or 4 and bring him home. When
tests are all back and looked at, we'll decide what to do next.

X-ray person wants to do a CT scan, but those are $450-500...soooo...I
dunno.
I don't think I'll get another call back tonight. The dr. is thinking
this is an unusual thing happening to Warwick.

I posted this to the FML and had a suggestion to post this to the FHL.

My albino Warwick had a "wonky" eye...his eye looked bulgy, red and
cockeyed. I took him to the vet who took several x-rays looking for a
possible tumor or tooth issue. Neither was found.

Warwick was also sneezing and snuffling quite a lot, so the vet
assumed he had a sinus issue or allergy. He was put on several
different kinds of antibiotics (not all at once, but over a period of
time) and benedryl, but the sneezing didn't get better, his eye didn't
get better AND he developed a large bump on his head between his eyes.
Took him back in for more x-rays which still didn't show anything, so
vet did surgery on the lump. In the surgery she found lots of mucus
pushing through his sinus and got that all out and, what's the
word...cleaned everything out. Samples were sent off and no bacteria
was found or fungus. He was put on antiobiotics until the surgery
healed. He is currently not on any medications.

His sneezing did get better, but he still sneezes some and I feel like
he's lost some weight even though I do see him eat. Plus I think his
eye looks worse now. In other words, I still do not think he's much
better after his sinus cleaning.

I forgot to mention on my post to the FML that the vet did do a
glaucoma test which was negative.

Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, anything? I'm taking him back
to the vet, but I have a feeling she'll feel like she's done
everything she can think of to do. I would appreciate any ideas.
thanks, donna

Since Yahoogroups seems to be having trouble with one type of link to
send replies directly to posters this could be a new computer error on
its part involving photos sent earlier.
