Subject: [ferrethealth] Chronic Explosive Diarrhea, possible Lymphoma
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hello all,

My now 6 year old Squiggy has now been suffering from explosive
diarrhea and decreased appetite since 8/07. He has been through a
barrage of tests (barium x-rays, ultrasounds, various blood panels)
and we were resorting to exploratory surgery in a few weeks. He has
been through possible diagnoses of Ulcers and IBD and on various
doses and combinations of Amoxicillin, Prednisone, Metronidazole,
Carafate, Pepcid and Actigall. We have switched his diet around to
different brands of ferret food and between kibble, soup and gruel.
As a last resort before actually doing the surgery, I was weaning him
off of his Prednisone and Metronidazole and noticed that he began
refusing his food, treats, and ferret-vite. Last night, he was
crying while trying to take a poop. When he finished, I scooped him
out to check for proplapsed rectum. After cleaning him off, I
discovered his anal region was quite pink and inflamed, but not
proplapsed. We took him to the vet first thing this morning where he
weighed in barely over 704 grams, a severe loss. The vet said he was
quickly losing muscle mass and that he might have Lymphoma, which
would have been masked by the Prednisone he was on. She also said he
may not survive surgery. My vet is willing to do the surgery, but
made sure we understood that if he makes it, the after-care will be
really tough and that if it's Lymphoma, the chemo won't cure him and
may only protract his life by weeks or months. We have to make a
surgery decision tomorrow so that he can be on IV fluids for 24 hours
before-hand. He is wasting away before my very tear-filled eyes and
am hoping someone on the FHL has some guidance.

Thank you,

Very Upset Jennifer and her Jersey Fuzzbuckets
