We have had only 2 ferrets over the space of about 27 years who strongly preferred being
loners but could socialize under special situations.
One was a retired breeder who have an eye bitten through by a mounting male before she
came to us. She adored kits and humans but simply preferred to not tolerate adult ferrets.
The other was one of the most genetically messed up ferrets we ever took in. She was both
physically and intellectually very, very handicapped. There were two older ferrets who
learned her limitations but another older ferret who repeatedly tried to "cull" her. The older
one actually would try to rip out the underside of the handicapped one's throat even though
the healthy one was fine and even incredibly nurturing for all other ferrets in her lifetime.
When the two older tolerant ones passed away the handicapped one chose to not trust any
new additions to our family. Self-culling is not unknown if I recall right from readings
decades ago, but I don't know if new studies change that perception.
