Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Ferret not using front legs

I am not saying this is the case with your ferret, but I thought it
may be useful for you to know my ferret, Izzy's, story. Izzy is a two
yr old female that was throwing up when she was around 1yr old. She
went in for a vet appt, and x-rays were taken to look for evidence of
a blockage. No blockage was found (turns out she has a food
allergy/IBD) but something else was discovered....she has luxating
elbows. In her x-ray, both of her elbows were out of socket. The vet
could easily feel them pop in and out depending on the position the
ferret was taking in her hands. I have spoken to two different
veterinary orthopedic specialists about this, and they both had the
same opinion...if they don't bother her, then leave it. If it bothers
her, then she may need surgery. Perhaps your ferret has a similar
condition, where both elbows can pop out, but some sort of trauma
caused the first elbow to not go back into socket readily. Then, as
that one healed in the bandage, the other elbow has something similar
happen because it had to bear the weight. Given that what my ferret
has is extremely rare (or so I have heard asking around on this
forum), I would not assume your ferret is the same. But still, it is
useful to know and something to keep in mind as you talk to your vet
try to help your little one get through this.
