I'm so sorry for your loss Lisa. Unfortunately you are not alone.
Last year I lost 2 babies just 2 months apart. Both were around 4
years of age. And yes, I too expected my older ones to go first. I
lost Misty in January to lymphoma. The first sign was her coughing.
The first vet she went to gave her a chest x-ray and said she
couldn't see the lungs due to too much fluid and gave me a diuretic
to give her. After no improvement in 2 days she referred us to
another vet who could do an ultrasound on her and he said it was a
large tumor in her chest cavity pushing on her trachea. I had to
help her to the bridge within a week of her first vet visit. Then in
March a large tumor had suddenly appeared on the shoulder of my
Emma. Like overnight! She was immediately taken to the vet where he
did a needle biopsy. Within the 2 days that we awaited the biopsy
results Emma went downhill fast so I took her back to the vet. He
said the temporary results showed that the cells were probably
sarcoma. I also had to help her to the bridge that day. Sarcoma I
believe is pretty rare in ferrets and usually only can happen in cats
and ferrets. Someone correct me if I am wrong please. Recently a
friend of mine noticed a large lump on her ferrets leg which came up
very quickly as well. She took her to the vet where the he biopsied
it and it showed a fast growing cancer. He did immediate surgery and
took a large mass out. She almost lost her leg. This was last
week. The ferret is healing well and learning to walk again. Time
will tell if the cancer had already spread.

So every night now all 5 of my kids get a routine body check. I
don't know if it really would help in a diagnosis of a fast growing
cancer but for my piece of mind it does.

Again, I am sorry for your loss.
