Subject: [ferrethealth] Lack of socialization?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
First of all thanks again to anyone who commented on our issues with
Squirt. Unfortunately what we now believe was juvenile lymphoma
claimed him 2 weeks ago.
Since then we have taken in a new ferret from an owner who either
didn't know or was less than honest with the details of our newest
family member. We were told that we were receiving a 3-4 year old
male. When I asked to set up a ferret meet and greet, she offered to
just deliver him that day and brought me a large guinea pig cage with
a shredded hammock, shavings and a bag of corn based food. 3 days
later we have discovered that our boy is really a girl and we have
named her Ember as she is black eyed white with a black nose and looks
like she just rolled in the fireplace.
The biggest issue is... she doesn't seem to be all there. She has the
oddest ferret personality I have ever seen. She doesn't seem to be
"world-wise" at all. She often startles easily and is easily confused
when chasing our other ferret. I realize she is still adjusting to a
new home, but while watching her play chase we actually watched her
run head first into a dresser. I'm beginning to wonder if she is
actually older than we were told or if she has just been very
sheltered/caged for a looong time. (We are also working with her on
agression and fear biting issues which seem to be subsiding already).
I would love to hear from anyone with similar experiences or thoughts
on what we might be dealing with.
Thanks
Joanna (Dipsy & Ember)
