I hate this disease with a passion. I am a vet and lost 2 dogs with
this not much more then a ear apart. My younger one went first and
he was worked up the week before. He was slightly off one night, he
had ruptured his spleen, we did surgery his spleen was normal size
with 2 small nodules one of which burst. He went cardiac later that
night, and though seemed to be getting better coded before they could
echo his heart. I was devastated. My older dog was 5 years older.
Then 4 months later we lost a cat, the month after I lost my mom
suddenly, then 3 months later we diagnosed my older dog with
metastatic Hemangiosarcoma. I worked him up regularly also multiple
times thruout the year and since he was 15 at the time every 3 months
minimum. Regular x rays blood work etc. We did not diagnose until
ultrasound. He died 5 months after diagnosis.

So as you can see even the most trained experienced people can't
always pick it up. Regular work ups can't stop it. The following
year I saw a dog in Jan, another in feb, and another in march all
with Hemangiosarcoma and each one was a different presentation. It
is an awful form of cancer and more research needs to be conducted to
help us find it sooner and prevent it.

Hope this helps give you clarity of how difficult of a disease this
is.

Dr. Sue
