To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi,
I have recently adopted a little Ohio rescue sprite, Carissima and her
sister. Both are the siblings of the ferret I adopted in December. All
came from the DMK rescue. Two have developed cataracts and aren't even
a year old. The one I am posting about here is Carissima. She has a
paw that is permanently bent like a clenched fist. However, its not
fused closed because it can be gently stretched out but appears to cause
her pain to do that. I clip her nails in that closed position.
When she walks she has a pronounced limp and appears to walk on her
knuckles. Yet when she turns to run, she can extend it as you can see
in the photos I've posted under 'Carissima's bad paw.'
She is having to go in for a tooth extraction and the vet will examine
it more thoroughly when she's sedated and her leg will be x-rayed from
the shoulder down. He suspects a ligament issue but isn't certain until
he sees the x-rays. The shelter vet suggested a birth deformity.
I have posted a couple photos of her paw, - although there's not much
to see. Still if anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate the input.
Thank you.
Tressie

Question: Is she walking on the outer (ulnar) portion of the hand? I.E. is there
varus wrist -- kind of like varus ankle or twisted inward ankle as can happen w
clubfoot in humans at times? BTW, some human clubfoot, esp. if caught early
can respond well to braces which help the foot get used to not fisting and not
turning on the side as much.]
