Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Leg popped out of joint?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

My Basil was 3-4 months old when she first dislocated her elbow. She
jumped off the bed and just stood there looking at us with her arm
hanging paw knuckles down on the carpet. I was able to massage the
arm back into joint and she took off running normally. About a week
later she flew off the couch before we could catch her. After that
the arm would easily slide in and out of joint so we knew here was no
way it would heal on its own. We tried having it splinted but the
splint was too loose and wasn't taped to her body so it made the
problem worse. She scooted around by pushing with her back legs. This
pulled the splint down, allowing her elbow to come out of joint and
creating extra weight on the arm at the same time. We ended up in
surgery and had the arm pinned.

Do you know about how old the ferret it? If he's a little older, this
may just be something his elbows do now. If he's a baby and gets into
a lot of trouble a splint may be beneficial to keep him from causing
more damage. The problem is finding a vet with this experience since
a bad splint can easily cause as much damage. You might just want to
be extra careful with him. Without a splint he can at least maintain
the muscle mass in his arm. I know he's new to you, try to get an
idea of how often this happens to gauge what the risk of leaving it
alone is.

He likes to dig in their water dishes, and he was doing that last
night. Then he started to walk away from it, and I noticed that he
was walking differently and got a better look at him. He was
limping, and dragging his right front leg and it was twisted. I went
to go get the carrier to bring him to the hosp, and in the seconds
that it took me to do that, when I got back to him, it
mustve "popped" back into place. He could walk on it and put
pressure on it again. He's been fine since, running and playing as
usual. But is this something that he should be seen for? Ive never
had anything like this happen before, so I dont know if it was a
fluke thing, or if it will happen again? I'm assumming it popped out
of joint and then back in, as it all happened so fast. Any ideas or
input is greatly appreciated!
