Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Update on my Ferret Herb.
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi-
I would have to second the opinion that steroids are not considered a
valid therapy or "standard of practice" for adrenal disease - and
indeed should not be considered for primary adrenal disease alone
(uncomplicated by insulinoma).
In fact, in my opinion, steroid use does, over time, significantly
weaken the immune system in general making them more prone to
infection. We know that the prostate is one area of the body prone to
infection in an adrenal ferret - and setting up an animal for a
prostatic abscess is a recipe for disaster.
I would strongly second the opinion that lupron is an appropriate first
line of therapy coupled with possibly melatonin or surgery, depending
on the situation.
Steroid therapy should be reserved for animals documented to need them -
proven insulinomics and other steroid responsive conditions. Adrenal
disease is NOT a steroid responsive condition. Steroids are serious
medications and should only be used sparingly and when needed. No
insulinomic should ever be denied a steroid - but no animal not needing
a steroid should be placed on one, either.
I'd be happy to discuss this with your veterinarian off list.
