Subject: [ferrethealth] My Baby Needs Help!
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

When I went to bed last night, my baby, Bandit, was fine. He was
biting at his cage and rattling his water bottle like he does every
night at bedtime. When we got up this morning, however, he was
lathargic, not responding to me at all, and had no ability to move
his entire body. I called my vet, which can't get him in until
Monday, but did give me a few things I can try to do to keep him
comfortable until then. From first impression, he looks like he is
extremely dehydrated and emaciated. He doesn't want to eat anything.
They told me to try to give him water with an eye dropper, which has
done amazing things already. My ferret is going to be 8 years old in
Oct., which I know is quite a good age for a ferret. He has been
gradually losing weight and his appetite over the last few months. My
vet has run all kinds of test and nothing is apparent. He does not
have any kinds of cancer or anything else. He has always been a happy
healthy baby. After giving him the water, he has appeared to perk up
and is now trying to move about. But he has no use of his back legs
at all. He is trying and I can see him attempting to move them, but
he can't hold his weight on them at all. He looks extremely thin and
skinny and you can feel his bones. He is finally trying to eat soft
things, lol his favorite treat is butterscotch chips. Is there
anything I can give him to try to make him feel better or build his
strength back up? Has anyone else had this happen to their fuzzy
friends? What can be the underlying cause to such a drastic change?
He has always been so lively and rambunctious and to see him like
this is agnoy on both parties. Yes I know he is an old man, and I
know that the expectancy for a ferret is only 9 years, but I am not
ready to give up on someone that has been there through the years for
me just as he hasn't given up on me either. He is my baby, so if
anyone has any answers for me, I am begging please help me help my
baby! Thanks and God Bless!
