Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: proper food for insulinoma with kidney problem
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Chronic kidney disease or acute kidney disease?

What is the cause of the kidney disease? For example, if the ferret is prone to cystine
uroliths that has to take precedence and then a lower protein food will be needed.

With chronic kidney disease you want to reduce the level of phosphorus in the diet but it
is good to still have a high quality, very accessible protein so things like eggs are useful.
Usually people reduce phosphorous by reducing total protein but you can select protein
sources for lower phosphorous content.

Sources of Omega 3 fatty Acids such as Fish Oil (not cod liver oil) can be very helpful for
kidneys and a great snack.

says that for those who need to reduce phosphorous due to kidney disease the real
problem non-dairy animal origin foods are:

Protein carp crayfish
beef liver chicken liver
fish roe organ meats
oysters sardines

but there are probably more complete lists

Some pet food makers have special kidney diets.

may have what you need

Don't just go to any high protein source because of the insulinoma. Ask your vet which of
the two is currently your ferret's more critical problem and try to work out a balance.
Speak to your vet about diet.

If the kidney disease is acute then there may be no adjustment to food needed.

Remember that your ferret kidney patients need extra water, and do check the urine
specific gravity and pH among other things.
