Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: selamectin
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

G'day,
I'm grateful for all responses to my query about selamectin. More
about the ferret:

7th April he had been treated for a recurring ear mite problem with
the kitten dose up to 2.5kg. He weighed then 1200g. He had the same
treatment twice over a year ago when he suffered bilateral middle
ear infections because of ear mite infestation. The treatments with
selamectin were not 100% successful. It was impossible to thoroughly
clean his ear of debris. Maybe somewhere in the debris a few of the
little blighters managed to survive.

No blood tests have been done and won't be done because of his
condition being so poor. I don't like to weigh him anymore because
of the stress it caused him.

I finger feed him every few hours with enriched chicken puree. His
bodily functions are okay. He even manages pass a motion several
times a day even though he eats very little. His urine output
matches his fluid intake.

His fur comes off in bundles

A note of interest.
He was very slow in shedding his last winter coat. Last Christmas
(in Australia) he looked like a little Husky. While all the other
ferrets donned their sleek summer coats he wouldn't part with one
hair, not until the middle January. I was alarmed that something is
going on with his hormones. However I wasn't taken serious - the
best explanation someone came up with was that the reluctance to
shed could be a consequence of antibiotics he had over several
months, between February and October, treating his ear infections.

For now he choses to sleep in a paper shopping bag next to me. Every
so often he wakes up and rushes to the toilet and then into the bath
for a drink. His paws a pleasantly warm. His coat looks threadbare.
He has an odour but not of 'ammonia' which would indicate renal
failure.

That's all I can say for now.
Cheers,
from a remote part of Australia
