Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Fast time before surgery
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Many use a 4 to 6 hour fast. If the ferret has difficulty passing food then the fast may be
longer.

It is important to not have food that can be vomited during surgery because then it may be
aspirated (inhaled) and that can be fatal.

Being a bit dry is also useful.

The last ferret we had who had surgery had her food removed at maybe midnight to 2 in
the morning, and the fluids removed later. Sorry, but I don't recall the specifics offhand. Her
surgery was not first thing in the morning. The fast allowed a very early insulinoma to be
spotted during her morning pre-op blood work.

Rather than go from materials designed for cats and dogs leave a phone message for your
vet asking how long the fast should be.
