Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: proper food for insulinoma with kidney problem
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello Joanne,
With the glucose level of 73 (low normal) I would not
diagnosis your ferret with insulinoma yet. Was this a fasting
blood sample?
With the BUN normal and creat. only slightly elevated, I would
not call it chronic kidney failure yet. This may be just from dehydration.
Either way I would not use feline K/D for a ferret. The protein is too
low for a ferret. I would suggest using one of the "senior" ferret foods
(from Marshall's or Totally Ferret) instead. Both have a reduced protein
level. Another option would be the Iams kitten food. Again slightly lower
protein level without being too low. Also adding omega-3 fish oil (3V caps
liquid) to the food will help the kidneys out.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Murray, DVM
