Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Adrenal ferret/2 vets - was "Update on my ferret Herb"
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I called the vet #2 office. I was pretty on par with what we discussed, in
my first post. I was not able to get the doc on the phone but we do have a
follow up appointment on May 8th where I can drill him with my questions
then. What I want to know is *how* his course of therapy is supposed to
work.
This vet tends toward holistic approaches, maybe we need to keep this in
mind. And I think they must get a lot of conflict from people judging by the
vet tech's response to me explaining the opposition to steroid therapy I
found on the internet. She was nice though. She could not tell me how it
works and deferred me to the doc. for that explanation. What she could tell
me is that ALL of their Adrenal patients (with some exceptions that are
receiving holistic care) are getting the steroid drops. They don't use
Lupron or the other drugs at all in their office. They use Predisolone at a
very low dose and that is the key according to the vet tech. High doses over
prolonged periods will cause all those terrible health issues you all
explained but with the low dose and possibly not for the rest of his life -
but could be on and off. That part I am deferred to the doc again because
some patients are on it continually some are off and on and she doesn't know
what the doc has planned for Herb. The predisolone is a tablet that is
crushed and mixed into distilled water and can be given directly oral or on
food. She could not give me the specific dose either, she said the doc
formulates that himself.

She told me that all my questions were great to ask the doc and I should
write them down. She recalled some of our conversation from the first visit
though and reiterated the "cost vs. benefit" issue and she said she thinks
Herb will benefit most from the low dose steroid therapy.

Now, I KNOW I have it straight. From vet office #2. The vet tech said most
"people" have a problem with his methods but they don't understand the low
dose works with out the side effects.

So, I welcome the second barrage of comments. Especially from you vets out
there. If you could explain how steroids work? I will be asking him on May
8th though. I have my appointment with vet #1 this Saturday and at this
point still unsure if I should take the next Lupron shot -- if there is any
credibility to vet #2's course of action. ???

Laura (THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR WISDOM)
