Subject: [ferrethealth] Link between orange urine and Benebac? (post#2, if anyone has a minute, please... thank you so much! :))
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello all,
I am not sure if I did something wrong, but I didn't get any replies to my past post, so I will post again hopefully I can get some hints. I did search the FHL and the FML archives for BENEBAC, BENEBAC+URINE, but nothing answered my question yet. So I tried! :) I very much appreciate all of your time and knowledge!
My 4 year old male with no previous problems was on Benebac for five days to clear up some diarrhea. On the fifth day of benebac he developed some orange urine (stool is normal at this point, with some malabsorption). He didn't strain to urinate, he didn't vocalize and he didn't go often. I don't know how to tell if there is sand in his urine. I looked at it with tissues, but to no avail. His tummy is large and dips in the urine when he pees on the tile so he always "drips" as he walks away, because the urine soaks his tummy fur. His spleen is enlarged but no other conditions are present. He eats and drinks fine and his activity level is typical for him. The orange urine continued for two days AFTER I stopped administering the Benebac. When I called the vet she said that no urinalysis is called for because this colored urine might be a Benebac side-effect. I am a first time owner and I don't want to be contradicting a ferret doctor, HOWEVER it seems odd
to me that after TWO DAYS of being off Benebac he still has this. So I am thinking that maybe I didn't underline the fact that he has been off Benebac? Before I run the risk of making her mad, I would like some scientific "support" from anyone who might have had this before? Does this sound plausible?
Has anyone had the same thing happen after Benebac administration? Or should I insist on a urinalysis ?
I know that my issue is very trivial compared to others, but if anyone has a spare minute, I would love a hint. I very much appreciate all your help!
Thank you in advance!
Sonia and orange-pee-emitting Mackaroonie :)
