Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Adrenal ferret/2 vets - was "Update on my ferret Herb"
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
In my opinion and based on many years of treating ferrets with adrenal
disease, as well as many other diseases that actually DO require steroids - there is
no justification or rationale for the use of steroids, low dose or not, in
the treatment of ferret adrenal disease. None.
Low doses of steroids, given over time, have the same potential for causing
ulcers, fat deposition, suppression of the immune system etc, as high doses.
Steroids, given when not needed, can lead to the inability of the body to
respond to them if they are needed for the treatment of insulinoma and lymphoma.
And a truly holistic veterinarian will reach for steroids as a last resort,
not as a first.
Steroids have their place. And I have a number of ferrets on steroids for
treatment of insulinoma, lymphoma and inflammatory bowel disease (and the
occasional Addisonian). But the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism with steroids is
not appropriate.
