Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: steroids for IBD
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
Hi, Jeff. With regards to the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, my
goal in treatment is to control the issue with the lowest dose of medication
possible, and that will vary dramatically with each individual, from those that
simply need dietary modification to those that need low dose or higher dose
steroids, to those that need Imuran. It's not really possible to give you an
average dose of pred, therefore. Many of my IBD patients start off pretty high,
then slowly wean down or off of the medication as dietary changes take effect,
going back up with flares of the disease process.
Possible side effects are the same as always with pred - ulcers, suppression
of the immune system, fat deposition, activation of liver enzymes etc.
Ferrets, fortunately, tend to do well most of the time, even on long-term steroid
use, and in most cases, the side effects are low. Ulcers, which tend to be the
most worrisome, in my experience, can be reduced by making sure that the pred
is always given with food and that the ferret is monitored closely for any
evidence of bleeding or stomach pain.
Dr. Ruth
