Subject: [ferrethealth] Case of Canine Distemper in Ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

There was another case in the Grand Rapids area in December (ish) just passed. Also an MF baby.

Dr. Sue, other vets, and knowledgeable members would you think (as was my first thought) that dogs with distemper are bringing it in the door of the pet shop and then making it to the ferret?

Hi All,

I am a vet in the Chicago area. I just wanted to report that I had
seen a pretty bad case of canine distemper in a baby ferret yesterday.
It was from a pet shop and was a Marshall farms baby that was assummed
vaccinated. All the signs were there so the ferret unfortunately had
to be sent to the bridge. He was only 3months old. I have tissues
pending for confirmation but wanted to alert anyone that might be
acquiring a newbie. If you have other ferrets separate them for ample
amts of time before introducing a new one to your group if you aren't
sure where they came from. Keeping them separate for almost 2 months
is the safest but sometime hard. This is the first case I have seem in
my practice so be aware. Thanks.

Dr. Sue
