Subject: [ferrethealth] Dark areas forming on face
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a 2-3 year old male ferret with multiple issues. Most recently
he has developed dark areas on his face. He had about 3 areas (small
pea size) where the fur was gone on his face when I got him 12/23/07,
but because Teddy had several more serious issues, the vet suggested not addressing it at the time. The fur did grow back.

Then, around February or March, he got one dark spot below his right
eye that got darker and darker. Finally, it was a stiff black area.
One day, I got him out of the cage and the black spot was gone, fur and all. There was normal looking skin in it's place. The hair in that spot has not yet grown back.

April 1, his face was snowy white. I was out of town from 4/16 through 4/21 and when I returned, his face was dark in numerous spots. It has gotten a little worse over the past couple of days.

His vet suspected a skin infection, so he is on Clavamox. Since a
similar spot came and went on it's own before, I am not encouraged the Clavamox will fix it. Also, it is affecting a much larger area this time.

Has anyone else had a problem with something that looked and behaved
like this does? I have loaded a photo of Teddy's face into the album
labeled Julie's ferrets.

I saw Bandito's one photo of pemphigus that looked somewhat similar. (Thank you, Pam!) Has anyone reading this dealt with pemphigus before, and if so, is this how it behaved?

Thanks for any input,
Julie
