Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Case of Canine Distemper in Ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I would imagine anything is possible. Yes they NEVER have enough
immunity coming in. I frequent this pet shop though. They never
have more then 2 ferrets maybe 4 at a time. They don't deal with
puppies. The enclosure is solid decreasing contact. They only let 2
people in the store handle them. The are more specific about who
they adopt too and only adopt in pairs. They even would prefer an
alternate source over Marshall if they could find one. I find it
unlikely here in this store that is was pick up from dogs and to be
honest I haven't seen the distemper her in dogs either there was an
outbreak at Animal Care and Control about 3 to 4 years ago. I don't
know how or where it was picked up. I know the incubation period can
be long up to 42 days. The ferrets were in the store maybe 3-4
weeks. I don't know and it would be hard to prove either way. There
is limited contact with the public too. I suspect they had it coming
in but again it is just my suspicion based on my thourough
conversation with them and my visits to the shop. Another ver was
treating for eye issue and inappetence. That means his hospital is
exposed too. I hate infectious disease in general and unless we find
a way to keep everyone protected it will always be there rearing its
head. Thanks for listening.
