Those melatonin implants use a really big needle. Some ferrets can be
distracted with ferretone or another treat and seem not to notice it;
others will still react to it strongly and need to be restrained. The
times I've seen it go the very best (where the ferret acted like they
did not feel a thing), Lidocaine was used first to numb the skin,
either with a topical cream or an injection, and then a treat
distraction was also used when placing the implant. The cream is best
applied a good, long while prior to the implant - like 30 minutes to
an hour - and then has to be cleaned off prior to the implant, so the
lido injection is probably more practical in most cases.
