Inserting a melatonin implant is no different that inserting a
microchip, same size needle. I kinda doubt your vet routinely uses
anesthesia when implanting microchips, so I don't understand what is
different.

I have inserted melatonin implants myself with no anesthesia, and am
certainly not a trained, experienced medical person. As long as they
had something like Nutrical to lick on, they didn't even notice.

My answer to your question would probably be "no". If the vet needs
anesthesia for a simple implant, I would be concerned that anesthesia
would be used every time blood was drawn, or certain injections given.
That can't be healthy for the ferret, or inexpensive for you.
