Subject: [ferrethealth] Melatonin and other adrenal meds, and why treatment is important
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

With regards to melatonin, I routinely put in the implants as an office call
procedure with no anesthesia required - a gentle scruff and a puddle of
Ferretone for distraction seems to be all that is needed. I find the implants to be
more effective in most ferrets than the oral form.

Deslorelin in the implant form needed for ferrets, sadly, is not available in
the US, unless you know someone who is doing research on it and can get it
that way. If it was routinely available, it would be my number one choice of
medical treatment options. Since it is not, Lupron is the first choice drug,
plus/minus melatonin.

I must express my disagreement with the "adrenal disease is mostly cosmetic"
theory, however. Even in ferrets without the prostatic enlargement, anemia,
etc, there is muscle loss, fragility of the skin, greater likelihood of urinary
tract infections, stump pyometra in females, etc. The vet you are consulting
may have been lucky so far and not seen those, but if she continues to have a
number of patients that are untreated, she will eventually see them.
Prostatic problems causing inability to urinate may be the most obviously
life-threatening problem, but there are others.

Good luck, and I hope the Lupron works for your ferret.

Dr. Ruth
