Subject: Re: [ferrethealth] Melatonin and other adrenal meds, and why treatment is important
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I will talk to my vet about melatonin implants and anesthesia, I'll find out
what the real scoop is, why she would say she needs to use anesthesia.
I *wish* Deslorelin was available here.
Cosmetic Disease. I think this is the easiest way for the vet to explain
things with out "freaking" people out. I'm guessing here. I completely
understand it is not simply a cosmetic disease and realize all the
complications that can arise. Well, maybe not ALL but I'm aware that there
are some more, but, I know about all you listed. We watch and monitor for
this reason.
I don't think for a moment that my vet (#1) would suggest not treating a
ferret with adrenal disease so I think the comment about never having seen
one have the problems with their prostate and straining to urinate is in
regard to her patients that are treated with Lupron.
I've mentioned this before, don't know if it was on this particular list,
but my concern is living in California where ferrets are still illegal. Many
vets do see and treat exotics including ferrets. But, I wonder just how many
of them are really all that experienced with treating ferrets because of
the likelihood being lower that people will bring their animals in for
veterinary care here in this state. If there is anyone on this list who
lives in Southern California and you have a wonderful, experienced ferret
vet - I'd be overwhelmingly appreciative if you'd give a reference. But,
that is just my thought -- that most of these "issues" I'm dealing with such
as the doc not being comfortable injecting the implant, is because they
simply do not have the experience. Not like you vets in other states where
they are legal and it's OK to be in public with your ferret. Sure vets here
have "some" experience but I'm thinking that their experience couldn't hold
a candle to yours - out of state vets. Someone, or a few, have mentioned the
implant injection is just like injecting ID implants -- well, I'm not sure
many do do that here because of the laws. So, therefore my vet would not
know how that is either. It's very different to do it to a dog or cat vs. a
ferret.
Thank you very much for your input Dr. Ruth. Much appreciated.
Laura
