Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Case of Canine Distemper in Ferret
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
In a "possible" canine distemper case at a PETCO some years ago, all
the kits were removed from the general store area and put into
a "quarantine" area to be watched for possible signs of infection.
As it turned out, none of the remaining kits showed signs of
infection and were returned to the store floor. I say "possible"
case as it is my humble opinion the vet euthanized a kit with an
upper respiratory infection. He does not qualify (to me) as a
ferret knowledgeable vet, but that case is closed and I will move
on...
Have all the ferrets at the location of the little one who was
diagnosed with canine distemper been "quarantined" until the tissue
sample results have returned from the lab? Has the Board of Health
been notified of this situation?
This is a very scary situation as there is this period of "sit and
wait" for the test results to return while possible contaminated
animals are allowed free access to the general population.
I will monitor this site closely for any updates as this is a very
serious problem that could have a devasting impact on young, elder
and ailing ferrets who may not be current on vaccinations.
