Subject: [ferrethealth] Ferret Distemper Vaccine
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Hi,

I am new to post to this group, but I was wondering if after the ferrets get their distemper
vaccine, does that make them nicer and more lethargic? I got my 4 ferrets vaccinated two
weeks ago, 2 are 3 1/2 and the other 2 are approx. 8 months. The two older ferrets had
no reaction at all. They all received .6 ml of children's Benedryl 1 hour before the
appointment. One of the younger ferrets got very lethargic and wouldn't move from inside
the carrier where he decided to lay down while we were still in the exam room. The other
younger ferret began running to each corner of the exam room vomiting, and this went on
for a good 1/2 hour after receiving the vaccination. So we took the lethargic ferret out of
the carrier, and the vet immediately gave him a shot of Cortisol? I think that's what he
said. So he just laid on the exam table very flat and wouldn't move around until he got the
smallest amount of water. He was just laying there licking the water barely moving at all.
Meanwhile, the other one was just vomiting in every corner until the vet gave him the
Cortisol shot also. After the 45 minutes was up, there was no more vomiting and the
lethargic one was starting to move around. At least I'm glad that we stayed at the vet as
long as we did! But now here is where my question comes in. Does the vaccination make
them nicer, as in no more biting feet and ankles, to little angels and more cuddly? Or did
the experience of the vet scare them enough that they won't be as rambunctious anymore?
I got the younger ferrets when they were 6 months old, and all they did was run around
the room for a solid 4 hours, and now they wear out after 2 hours along with the older
ferrets, who wear out after 1 1/2 hours. They all sleep in the same cage together.
