Subject: [ferrethealth] distemper
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Off list i have been informed of a DIFFERENT distemper situation.
This is NOT one involving kits or pet stores. Instead it is one
in the Southwest where there may be a local flare-up among
wild animals and ferrets who have not been vaccinated in a
regular enough fashion have gotten the illness.

Such flare ups happen in many areas, with some years worse than
others.

Here are a few tips for when that happens in your own area:

vaccinate those ferrets who can be vaccinated (even the ones who
can't be vaccinated are better protected from exposure if the ones
they live with can't get and share the illness),

leave shoes outside,

avoid unknown animals,

keep the ferrets inside,

vaccinate dogs, too, as well as other susceptible animals for whom
there is a distemper vaccine and who are healthy enough to be
vaccinated, and keep those animals inside as much as possible
during an outbreak of canine distemper since they can track it in, too.

I am sure that others will have more tips and you can find ones in
the wonderful FHL Archives:

Many thanks to the couple who informed me about that outbreak. I
don't know if i am allowed to say who told me or where it is happening
but those outbreaks are often regional, anyway. I recall that when we've
had outbreaks in NJ usually a large chunk of the tri-state area is involved.
