We had the kindest, most cooperative ferret imaginable --
including during any health procedure -- who still needed
a tiny touch of Iso gas when she would have blood drawn.

Why? She had skin that was even more like shoe leather
than most and thin and very squirrely veins. The combo
meant that even the most ferret-experienced vets and techs
needed to try multiple times, so for her own comfort both
emotionally and physically she was usually groggy for the
blood draws.

If the vet has noticed particularly thick skin on your ferret,
or is simply worried about causing pain, those, too, can be
a reason to want to sedate. Ask WHAT the vet wants to sedate
with. If it is just a tiny bit of either Iso or Sevo gas that is
about as gentle as possible.

Also, if the vet is worried about pain ask if they have the
dermal Lidocaine gel, as Pam mentioned, because then the
vet may feel okay doing it with nothing else.
