I think I would talk to the manager and offer to "train" the staff on
how to care for the ferrets. Second to that, I might offer to come in
weekly and help with them, offering to cut nails (pet stores seem to
be notorious about letting nails get too long, causing potential
buyers to get scratched), etc. At that time, you can gently offer
advice on things they may do differently.
As for the sick one, I probably would have asked them to turn it over
to me (rescue/shelter). If that didn't work, I probably would have
offered to buy it for a very reduced price. If that didn't work, I
would probably buy it at full price, and then take it to my vet for
emergency care or euthanization. I would take it up with the
store/manager/owner/corporate afterward. Others may disagree but I
couldn't leave an animal that sick there to die a lingering death.
