We are currently dealing with IBD with one of our ferrets (Trinny). Our vet's approach was to first see if it was bacterial-based, so he prescribed two weeks of amoxicillin, coupled with carafate (given 2 hours apart from the amoxicillin). This helped, but did not cure the problem, or get it in check, so she's been on Prednisolone for 3 or 4 weeks since, although now we're trying to wean her off of that. She has improved, but we want to see if it was the Pred that has helped her to improve, or if it's been her diet change. She now eats a more easily digestible food (in this case, Gerber's Stage 2 turkey baby food has become the main part of her diet). Trinny is otherwise very healthy and very active at approximately 5 years of age, and like you, we do not want to put her under the scalpel unless some other compelling reason arises.
