Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Coccidiosis and gastritis in Ethiopia -- need advice
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

Nanci! Thank you so much for your long and useful post. Yes, you
have ferret friends here. Do you want to come for a visit?

We seems as though we are out of the woods here, but of course any
little potential symptom has me on the jump.

I'm interested to hear you treated for 21 days. I was about to stop,
because it's been 2 weeks since we started this round of treatment,
but I have been worried about a new ferret, Lucy. Her stools are
fine, but in the last few days she has lost weight and is not as
lively.

I'm also concerned that there might be another parasite or illness
we haven't ID'd yet. I've bee unable to access one of Sukie's
sources about a combo problem, but I'll work on it some more
tonight. At first we suspected a connection w/ a bone/blood meal
we'd had as part of the diet -- it came well recommended, but our
vet has found it caused problems in dogs from inadequately
sterilized bone.

When I was afirst looking for info and read about the connection w
offal, I thougt for sure that was the connection, but the symptoms
did not fit. Still, Sukie's bringing it up too makes me want to look
deeper into that.

Rico seems almpost absolutely back to normal. His stool analysis at
the human lab showed no parasites at all. But I was suspicious of
the results since I had read that it is difficult to spot coccidia
in the stool. And of course the specific image I now have in my head
of Agnes makes me more wary.

My idea as to why three died and one did not is that we began
treating that one earlier than the others. I have only one idea as
to why each of the three seemed to recover and then went downhill
forever. Perhaps their immune systems were too weak to fight after
the first shutdown of the parasite bloom. Still they all SEEMED very
healthy and bouncy and mischievous, so I would have expected that
they were in full health.

Do you think the stress of the move would last 3.5 months?
