Subject: [ferrethealth] removal of implant
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

One of my ferrets who did have insulinoma had her first melatoinin
impant put in on Tuesday.

Thursday she started acting a little sluggish but I assumed that
it was the sleepiness side effect that I read about.
Friday morning she wouldn't eat anything and so I gave her some
Nutrical before going to work. She did eat some duck soup that night.
Saturday morning, she absolutely refused to eat and drink. I
rushed her over to the vet who had no idea of why she was not eating
or drinking, shaking uncontrollably, and having green stool. The vet
was very worried and referred me to the emergency clinic. The vet gave
her sub-q and some Nutrical before we left.
The er vet said that her glucose was around 700 and her
electrolytes and kidneys values were off a little (I'm sorry I didn't
get the exact numbers as I was in panic mode) He said that he was
going to keep her overnight and get an IV into her and check her BG
frequently.
Last night when I called to see how she was doing the tech said
that she had stopped shivering and drank a little water on her own,
but still didn't want to eat anything. She said that they were going
to test her bg again at 1 am. I won't know anything more until after
11 this morning.

I was wondering could all of this be happening from the implant
that was put in? I really believe that the vet's new office manager
ordered the wrong kind of implant because after it was implanted I got
a call saying that the 1 implant was going to cost me $72. I called
the vet yesterday to see if the ordered 2 and charged me for both of
them and the receptionist said that she doesn't believe so and told me
that she would have the vet call me back to see if maybe that was what
is causing all of this to happen. I never got a call back.

Plus, I know when the vet and I were first talking about implanting my
ferret she was teling me that there was some anedotal evidence
suggesting that melatonin implants mess with insulinomic ferrets
glucose levels.

How hard is it to remove the implant? I checked the archives but
was unable to find anything.
