I am not a vet but I ***suspect*** that in some ways removal would be like getting out a
large splinter EXCEPT that the vet would need to be careful to not puncture it and maybe not
squeeze it.
There have been mixed results from the use of melatonin in ferrets who have insulinoma.
Some seem to do better on it, some seem to do worse, and some seem to show no
difference. In that way it is rather like the use of Diazoxide in ferrets -- incredibly variable.
There is still so very, very much that is unknown about insulinoma, though, with so much
being hypothetical.
That 700 figure worries me greatly; that is a very diabetic range. Could you give some
more history about the insulinoma in this ferret: ferret age, meds being used, mg amount
(or ml along with concentration which will look like: mg/ml) and how often each day, length
of time the insulinoma has been present, whether pancreatic surgery has been done and
type, other health problems, etc. Had the ferret just had a large amount of sugar before the
blood draw?
There is a good bit of information about diabetes in ferrets and some about ferrets whose
numbers range widely in the FHL Archives:
