Subject: [ferrethealth] Prolapsed rectum
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I posted this on another ferret board, and was advised to come here.

Snack's prolapsed rectum is getting worse. It got better for awhile
after we switched to Evo from Mazuri, but then is started getting
steadily worse.

It also seemed to get better when she was on Chloramphenicol for
awhile, so we tried it again but it did nothing. She was on the chlor
because of suspected ECE.

She gets Pepcid AC twice a day, smashed up in her Ferret Vite. Her
poop was looking mucus-like again, so she just finished up a three
week bout of Amoxicillin. It helped her poops, they look normal now,
but her rectum is really sticking out there, and is red and inflamed.

She was diagnosed with an inoperable adrenal tumor earlier this
year--the tumor had already invaded some critical areas. She is on
monthly lupron shots, which have helped her gain weight and her coat
has come in nicely (except for her rat tail!).

I must be missing something. I've googled but haven't come up with
much regarding prolapsed rectums in ferrets.

Oh, she's about 6 years old and she shares her home with two males
about the same age. They also get a jar of the chicken baby food a
day to share.

I searched and read posts here about prolapsed rectums--I've seen
these things mentioned: acidophilus and slippery elm bark,
prednisolone, clavamox, clarithomycin, and carafate. Do you think any
of those would help in this case?

Instead of just looking in the Yahoogroups site instead look at the 7 years
