Subject: [ferrethealth] Symmetrical skin lumps
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

An alumnus from our Shelter has developed a strange condition over the
past couple of weeks. Before the trouble started he was a true maniac
at playtime, never missing an opportunity to bounce around like a
dervish. Currently he is lethargic, he's lost quite a bit of weight
and he's overall not very happy - which seems to tell us he has
something going on that's more than seems to meet the eye.

Tang, a middle-aged weezil with no other apparent problems, has
developed several regular flesh colored bumps that are symmetrical on
his body. That's two on either side of his neck, two on either side
of the jaw, two on either side of his belly, two on either side of his
abdomen, etc. The lumps are small but noticeably raised. He itches
like fire and spends most of his awake time scratching. For temporary
relief he's been getting benadryl, which of course knocks him
out...but before the benadryl, again he's not his normal self.
Finally, his nose, paws and other tissues will often appear hot pink
to magenta, and then last night all four feet appeared rather red -
but the color changes often and the extreme coloration comes and goes.

He's been to one vet who ruled out any sort of mite or other vermin
(and he lives with 10 others who have no issues). Next stop is
another vet who will do a skin biopsy of a lump or two to try to get
an answer.

I thought of lymphoma of the skin as a possible cause, and I would
expect the biopsy could rule that in our out. Meanwhile, any other
suggestions as to what to look for?
