Subject: [ferrethealth] Reaction to ear cleaner?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I have a group of 5 at home and one ferret in particular (BLackie) seems to get repeated
ear mite re-infestations. His ears are perpetually dirtier than the others. I just gave a
round of Revolution all around. In the past, Blackie seems to have experienced an allergic reaction to the standard ear cleaner drops (Shepherd and Greene) Not only does he squirm
and squack extra bad when I apply the drops but afterwards he runs around scratching his
head and jumping all over the place for hours. I even noticed a pattern of him vomiting on
occasion within 12 hours of having cleaned his ears.
But then a friend suggested using the 100% aloe vera gel (the clear kind) instead of the
liquid ear cleaner and he does much better with this (no vomiting, no running around for
hours afterwards).
I tried to find the ingredients to some of the other liquid ear cleaners but could not on-
line. Does anyone have suggestions as to alternative cleaners that may be more effective
in loosening wax than aloe vera yet more organic and less irritating than the Shepherd and
Green version?
I do not want to use mineral oil nor peroxide solution.
I clean my ferrets ears frequently and always treat all 5 of them for mites when necessary.
BTW, Blackie was just to the vets this past week and got a clean bill of health (and annual
bloodwork) other than the mites. If he had an inner ear infection would this show up in
routine bloodwork or other manifestations?
thanks for your advice.
