Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: Adrenal Treatments
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com
I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, so if someone can clear it
up, I would appreciate it. Does this study indicate that
CRYOSURGERY leads to a significantly shorter survival time? I
thought that cryosurgery was generally considered the preferred
method, because the vet is able to resect more of the tissue.
Or is it saying that the reduced survival time was related to the
BILATERAL partial resection? (Though later the quote indicates no
affect on survival based on the nature of the resection.)
Or is it impossible to tell from this study? (Or am I completely
off-base, and not understanding the study at all? :) )
Anyone have more insight?
Thank you,
Becky

Here is the increased risk factor:

so it was this cryosurgery procedure which was connected to
decreased survival time.
Cryosurgery has been debated before with some vets saying that
they see better long term results with traditional surgical approaches.
For this type of cryosurgical approach there was reduced survival.
Perhaps the nuances of this approach will be explained by some who
better understand surgery such as those who perform procedures.
These did not negatively impact survival:
Survival time of ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism

As far as I know this is the first large comparative survival study
done for adrenal surgery and except for that one procedure the
news is excellent through the first 2 years after surgery with the
study not looking at data further out. --SDC]
