Subject: [ferrethealth] Possible Batch of Bad Food?

Does anyone feed their furries the 8-in-1 Ultimate Crunchy Advanced
Nutrition? Mine have been on it for almost two years and I have
never had a problem with it until recently. I purchased two bags
from a very reputable online store (I have purchased from it many,
many times and always been very pleased with their products) about a
month ago. When I opened the first bag I immediately noticed a
change in the product. The food was much darker in color, a little
harder in texture and smelled like burnt chicken. My first thought
was "this is different." My second thought was "well it
says 'chicken and rice formula'." I fed it to all my ferrets since
it was either that or they went hungry until I could get to the store
again. The food immediately made one of my ferrets very sick ($300
vet bill).
I went out and bought two bags of the same food from a local pet
store. The food looked back to 'normal.' My ferrets devoured both
bags. I went out and bought two more bags from the same store. I
opened a bag tonight and low and behold...its much darker, harder and
smells like burnt chicken. I'm afraid to feed it to my kids. Has
anyone else noticed this? Any advice? If I contacted the
manufacturer would they tell me anything? Has anyone ever dealt with
an issue such as this before? Is the food safe to offer? I'm not
worried about the money issue. I don't want a refund, I don't want
store credit, I don't want free food. I just want food that isn't
going to make my ferrets sick! Should I consider a change in diet?
Any insite would be greatly appreciated.
[Moderator's Note:
Heather now has gotten a hold of the phone numbers
and email of the food manufacturer to check into this.
She will add an update when she knows more.
Anyone planning to reply is asked to be careful to stay
on-topic. Avoid speculations because those will be rejected
per FHL Rule Number 9 which reads:
>9) This list is not Consumer Reports. Opinions of various ferret
>health related practices is allowed. Opinions of specific breeders,
>shelters, ferret owners and pet shops is not. Political topics are
>not allowed.
When speculations take off more harm than good
results so those posts tend to be rejected.
Helpful advice is very much appreciated! So, if you have had
recent questionable batches that meet the description, please,
let her know. How you successfully followed up (w/o names)...
in any situation where bad food was involved may help her.
General information about dealing with bad food batches and
any illnesses that might arise are also very appreciated.]
