Subject: [ferrethealth] Re: That old question again - adrenal disease, surgery vs Lupron?
To: ferrethealth@yahoogroups.com

I went through a similar set of questions with my 3 yr old, but I knew I was opting for
surgery because of her age. First I got a Tennessee panel to confirm adrenal. And then
rather than spend more money on an ultrasound, I went to a vet that had confidence
whether she required a right or left surgery, even though I love the vet that only had
confidence in a left. Things can be missed on an ultrasound and the vet can end up with
surprises they aren't prepared for.

It's much more likely that only one gland is affected and not both. If it turned out to be
both the vet would probably leave the better of the two and remove it at a later time to
prevent the ferret from crashing. After the second one is removed the ferret may or may
not need hormone replacement. Sometimes there's enough tissue left behind to produce
hormones.

Lupron can manage it but it's my understanding that the lupron can lose effectiveness and
even become ineffective in the event of malignancy, in which case it may also be too late
for surgery.
