I'm surprised that the oil would not attack the
plastic of the mask. Those must be made of a
different plastic than I thought that they were,
which just goes to illustrate the risks of making
assumptions! I'll have to try to remember to
mention that and to ask what problems it
might pose in clean-up of for materials.
I can think of several reasons why a vet might
not let someone into the area with gas but the
biggest would be if a surgical procedure or
major test like an ultrasound was going on in
there at the time on someone else's animal.
Alternating surgical days is not unusual so a
different vet or a visiting ultrasound specialist
could have been back there. I don't think it was
until we had to help with a minor emergency
surgery that the past vet hospital allowed us
into the surgical theater and when our exotics
vet went to a different hospital we followed but
even now if another vet is operating then we all
respect that vet's specific need to have as little
interruption as possible so there are times we
just plain don't venture back.
When one of ours needs a mercy shot then
normally the individual has either a bit of gas
or a tiny shot to fall asleep (in our arms for the
shot) and then the final injection is given when
the individual is unconscious. Our vet has a
sealed plexiglass box for the gas that keeps
stress way down. Usually the ferrets become
very curious about the gas and being investigative
creatures they go over to the tube and draw in huge
breaths.
Our vet and Steve and I tend to choose between the
gas and the first injection based on the personality
of the ferret to minimize stress to the individual.
A great many years ago (decades) when one of our
little ones had to be in a specialty hospital in a
different state for her only chance of survival there
was no way we could make it there for her mercy
shot so when asked the vets had a container of heavy
cream picked up and she got to have some of that
with her first shot and stroking till she lost
consciousness.
It seems like there are multiple very good solutions
and now a new option to look into to make this
even less stressful.
