Hi
Yesterday one of my ferrets knocked some books down and they made
quite a thud as they landed beside Carissima. Carissima has
cataracts so does not see very well. She is only a year old and one
of my Ohio rescues. The books didn't touch her but the noise was
pretty loud.
Carissima became so frightened that not only did her tail puff out
but she had what would best be described as an asthma attack. I've
never encountered this in any of my ferrets. She was gasping for
breath and coughing at the same time - sounded like an old man. My
daughter had asthma as a child and when very upset or frightened
she'd have an asthma attack. That's what it sounded like.
I waited for her to calm down so I could pick her up but she kept up
with that gasping cough. I gently picked her up and she repeadtedly
bit me, she was so frightened. Her heart was pounding really fast
and hard. When I tried putting her back down she wanted to stay in
my arms and wouldn't let me put her down. She kept clinging to my
sweater so I walked with her and gently rocked her until she was okay
with being put down.
But I'm wondering what that gasp cough was all about? I've never
heard of a ferret having asthma. Any ideas?
Tressie
